JEE Main 2027 Weightage
JEE Main 2027 Chapter-wise Weightage for Physics, Chemistry and Maths
Updated: 4 November 2026 | By AAYAM Career Institute, Indore
NTA does not publish an official chapter-wise weightage for JEE Main, so any weightage of chapters in JEE Mains is an estimate built from past papers. Analyses of the 2024 to 2026 papers agree that Current Electricity and Optics in Physics, Physical and Organic Chemistry, and Coordinate Geometry and Calculus in Maths have carried the most questions.
The figures on this page are approximate ranges taken from analyses of JEE Main 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers published by education websites. They are not official NTA data, they change from shift to shift, and they are not a prediction of the exact JEE Main 2027 paper. Always prepare from the official syllabus on jeemain.nta.nic.in.
How JEE Mains Weightage Is Worked Out
NTA releases the JEE Main syllabus and the exam pattern, but it never says how many questions will come from each chapter. The weightage tables you see online are made by teachers and education websites who sort every question in past papers by chapter and count them.
The ranges on this page are based on analyses of the JEE Main 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers. We have only included chapters where more than one analysis gave a similar figure, and we show a range instead of one exact number. Different sources group topics differently and count different shifts, so their numbers rarely match exactly.
Remember that JEE Main is held in many shifts, each with its own paper. A chapter can have three questions in one shift and one in the next. Weightage shows a pattern over many papers; it does not tell you what will come in your shift.
JEE Main 2027 Paper Pattern: 25 Questions per Subject
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) has 75 questions, divided equally between Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each subject has a Section A of multiple-choice questions and a Section B of numerical-value questions, as set out in the JEE Main 2027 notice.
| Subject | Section A: MCQs | Section B: Numerical-value questions | Total questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 20 | 5 | 25 |
| Chemistry | 20 | 5 | 25 |
| Mathematics | 20 | 5 | 25 |
Under the 2026 marking scheme, a correct answer earned 4 marks and a wrong answer cost 1 mark in both sections, so each subject was worth 100 marks. One question is therefore worth about 4% of a subject. The notice for 2027 also specifies negative marking in both sections. For dates and the application process, see our JEE Main 2027 registration guide.
JEE Main Physics Chapter-wise Weightage
In Physics, electricity, magnetism, optics and modern physics together carry a large share of the paper. Mechanics is spread across many smaller chapters, so each one carries only a question or two, but together they still add up to a sizeable part of the paper.
| Physics chapter or unit | Approx. questions per paper (out of 25) |
|---|---|
| Ray Optics and Wave Optics | 2 to 4 |
| Current Electricity | About 3 |
| Modern Physics (Dual Nature, Atoms, Nuclei) | 2 to 5 (estimates vary) |
| Electrostatics | 1 to 3 |
| Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism | 1 to 2 |
| Electromagnetic Induction and AC | 1 to 2 |
| Rotational Motion | 1 to 2 |
| Oscillations and Waves | 1 to 2 |
| Kinematics | 1 to 2 |
Optics has been especially steady. One count of the April 2026 shifts found three or four Optics questions in every shift. Estimates for Modern Physics vary the most, because some sources include Semiconductors in it and others do not.
JEE Main Chemistry Chapter-wise Weightage
Chemistry questions are spread across Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. In several JEE Main 2025 shifts, Physical Chemistry had the largest share, but the split changes from shift to shift, so all three branches need equal attention.
| Chemistry chapter or branch | Approx. questions per paper (out of 25) |
|---|---|
| Organic Chemistry (all chapters together) | About 8 to 10 |
| Coordination Compounds | 1 to 3 |
| p-Block Elements | 1 to 3 |
| Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure | 1 to 2 |
| Thermodynamics | About 2 |
Inorganic Chemistry questions are mostly direct and based on NCERT, so careful reading of the NCERT textbook pays off for chapters like Coordination Compounds and p-Block Elements. Organic Chemistry rewards practice with reaction mechanisms and conversions.
JEE Main Maths Chapter-wise Weightage
In Maths, Coordinate Geometry and Calculus have carried the largest share of questions in recent papers. Algebra is also a large area, but its questions are spread across many chapters.
| Maths chapter or unit | Approx. questions per paper (out of 25) |
|---|---|
| Coordinate Geometry (Straight Lines, Circles, Conic Sections) | 2 to 5 |
| Integral Calculus | 2 to 4 |
| Matrices and Determinants | About 2 |
| Three Dimensional Geometry | About 2 |
| Vector Algebra | 1 to 2 |
Vector Algebra and Three Dimensional Geometry are closely linked, and together they have usually given about three to four questions. Matrices and Determinants is a short chapter that has regularly given about two questions, which makes it one of the best returns on study time.
How to Use Chapter Weightage in Your JEE Main 2027 Preparation
Use weightage to set priorities, not to cut the syllabus. A practical approach for Class 11, Class 12 and dropper students:
- Finish high-weightage chapters first: make sure chapters like Current Electricity, Optics, Coordinate Geometry and Integral Calculus are strong before the January session.
- Do not skip short chapters: chapters with one or two questions are often quick to learn and can give easy marks.
- Solve previous-year questions chapter by chapter: this shows you how each chapter is actually tested.
- Take full-length mock tests: they show which chapters cost you marks under time pressure.
- Check the official syllabus: prepare from the syllabus in the JEE Main 2027 Information Bulletin on jeemain.nta.nic.in, not from unofficial "deleted topics" lists.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does NTA publish official chapter-wise weightage for JEE Main 2027?
No. NTA publishes the syllabus and the exam pattern, but not how many questions each chapter will carry. All JEE Mains weightage tables, including this one, are estimates made by analysing past papers.
Which chapters have the highest weightage in JEE Main Physics?
In analyses of the 2024 to 2026 papers, Ray and Wave Optics, Current Electricity and Modern Physics have carried the most questions, followed by Electrostatics, Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Rotational Motion.
Which part of Chemistry carries the most weightage in JEE Main?
Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry each carry a substantial share. In several JEE Main 2025 shifts, Physical Chemistry had the largest share, but the split changes from shift to shift. Organic Chemistry together usually accounts for about 8 to 10 questions.
Which Maths chapters are most important for JEE Main?
Coordinate Geometry and Calculus have carried the largest share of Maths questions in recent papers. Matrices and Determinants, Vector Algebra and Three Dimensional Geometry also appear regularly, usually with about one to two questions each.
Can I skip low-weightage chapters for JEE Main 2027?
It is risky. Weightage changes from shift to shift, and a chapter with one question in one shift may have two or three in another. Small chapters are often quick to learn, so skipping them can cost easy marks.
How many questions are there in each subject in JEE Main 2027?
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) has 75 questions: 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each subject has 20 multiple-choice questions in Section A and 5 numerical-value questions in Section B.
Is there negative marking in JEE Main?
Yes. In the 2026 scheme, a correct answer earned 4 marks and a wrong answer cost 1 mark in both MCQ and numerical-value questions, with no marks for unattempted questions. The JEE Main 2027 notice also specifies negative marking in both sections; check the Information Bulletin for the full scheme.
